Open Access

Topics in Scholarly Communication: Open Access

Overview

Read and Publish Agreements –  contracts between academic institutions and publishers that shift the traditional subscription-based model to one that supports open access publishing. Under these agreements, institutions pay a combined fee that covers both the cost of accessing subscription content and the APCs for their authors’ open access publications.

Subscribe to Open (S2O) Agreements – In this type of agreement, academic libraries use their journal subscription funds to support the journal transition to open access.

S2O Agreements

Annual Reviews – converts new volumes to open access once they have determined sufficient subscription funding has been achieved. Their model does not require any author fees. They have seen article usage double or triple after conversion to open access.

Open Library of Humanities (OLH) - OLH is a diamond open access publisher, which means they leverage community support to the publisher's financial operations. This means authors do not need to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC), and readers do not need to pay a subscription fee to access articles.
