Federally funded research data repository requirement deadline approaching
Implementation of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) memo mandating federally funded research data be deposited in a digital repository will take effect December 31, 2025. Data impacted is for research funded in 2025 or later. The Nelson Memo, as it is frequently referred to, requires free open access to peer-reviewed publications and associated research data, without any type of embargo for readership or in most cases, re-use of data.
Federal agency data sharing policy overviews can be reviewed on the overview page produced by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).
Research data should align with the National Science and Technology Council's "Desirable Characteristics of Data Repositories for Federally Funded Research." Characteristics covered in the document are preservation, curation, data quality, and accessibility. The use of human data is also discussed.
Not sure how to pick a data repository? Here are some questions to consider:
Does the funding opportunity announcement specify a required repository?
Yes: Use the designated repository
No: go to question 2
Is there a discipline, domain or data-type specific repository?
Yes:
Upload to the appropriate repository
No:
Investigate other options such as a Generalist Repository
Is your data less than 2GB?
Yes:

No:
