Children's Literature

"A primary purpose of American Indians in Children's Literature (AICL) is to help you know who Native people are. That knowledge can help you understand why Native people object to being misrepresented. Though we are certain that no author ever sets out to deliberately misrepresent Native people, it happens over and over again. Information is the only way to counter those misrepresentations. On American Indians in Children's Literature, we publish analyses of children's books, lesson plans, films, and other items related to the topic of American Indians and/or how we this topic is taught in school. "

The Children's Literature Center assists users in gaining access to all children's materials dispersed throughout the Library. The Library holds approximately 500,000 children's books and related items, such as boxed and board games, sound recordings, maps, and illustrations. The books, and all other materials, can be searched and in many cases retrieved by accessing the Library's online catalog.

As families move from Kenya to Finland or Brazil to Mexico or Viet Nam to California, books published in their native country or in their first language often must be left behind. In their new homelands, it may be difficult, if not impossible, to find children's books from their cultures and in their mother tongue. Parents have little access to the books and stories from their youth to pass on to the next generation. Many children must grow up without knowledge of their family's heritage and first language. A fundamental principle of the Foundation is that children and their families deserve to have access to the books of their culture, as well as the majority culture, regardless of where they live.

Many annotated fairy tales, "including information about their histories, similarities with various tales, bibliographies and other tidbits."

TTLG provides a tool to help find truly exceptional books for the young people. We only review the books we like and TTLG has expanded to include books published by small houses, to publicize organizations who work for children, and to publicize the work of new authors and illustrators.

The University of Florida’s Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature contains over 6,000 digitized children's books free to read online from cover to cover.
