Reference Information

When starting a research project in history, it can be helpful to find reliable reference information that can help you identify key figures and events, situate yourself in the historiographical debate, and suggest further reading.  There can be terrific information out on the internet--even Wikipedia is pretty reliable for most purposes--but the following are also good places to start:

Print Resources

We have a lot of reference books on all kinds of historical subjects; in the library catalog, you can search for "encyclopedia" or "dictionary" for major historical or geographical areas; the following are just a few examples:

Citations

The easiest way to keep your citations under control as you research and write is to use a citation manager, such as Zotero.  This will let you keep copies of all the articles and chapters you read, the notes you take, drafts of your paper, and then as you write can put properly formatted citations and bibliographies in your paper as you type it in Word or Google Docs.
