New Spain

The "Viceroyalty of New Spain" was established in 1535.  At its greatest extent this region stretched from modern-day Panama to southern California and Texas.  Each Spanish viceroyalty was divided into administrative units, called "Audiencias."  Cuba and Puerto Rico were the final parts of this Empire relinquished by Spain in 1898 by the terms of the Treaty of Paris, ending the Spanish American War.
