Publishing

From why you should publish to picking a journal and all the steps in between, this guide will help you publish a manuscript.

Article Types

Article types are defined and include a link to reporting guidelines. Reporting guidelines list out many of the smaller details of publishing. While you may not have every single check point, it is good to read through some of the guidelines available in order to make yourself aware of all the information points to include in your manuscript.

Case Report: A detailed report of the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of an individual patient.

Guidelines

Clinical Practice Guidelines: are meant to help ensure that patients receive appropriate treatment and care. For instance, the guidelines on cervical cancer include recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment, as well as recommendations concerning psychosocial support, rehabilitation and follow-up care. Guidelines summarize the current medical knowledge, weigh the benefits and harms of diagnostic procedures and treatments, and give specific recommendations based on this information. They should also provide information about the scientific evidence supporting those recommendations.

Guidelines

Clinical Study: In medicine, a clinical study report is a type of article that provides in-depth detail on the methods and results of a clinical trial. They’re typically similar in length and format to original research articles.

Meta-analysis: a quantitative, formal, epidemiological study design used to systematically assess the results of previous research to derive conclusions about that body of research. Typically, but not necessarily, a meta-analysis study is based on randomized, controlled clinical trials.

Guidelines

Method article: a medium length peer-reviewed, research-focused article type that aims to answer a specific question. It also describes an advancement or development of current methodological approaches and research procedures (akin to a research article), following the standard layout for research articles.

Guidelines

Rapid communication: Concisely-written, high-quality research reports for which rapid publication is considered desirable. Papers in this category will follow a streamlined schedule and must meet the high standards expected of all papers published by the journal, presenting fully developed primary research. They often benefit from prioritized peer review and rapid online publication. Just as with standard submissions, everything that is required for the understanding of the paper must be contained in the submission itself.

Research Article: a journal article in which the authors report on the research they did. Research articles are always primary sources. Research articles are written by experts, for experts and must adhere to the highest standards of peer review and scholarly communications.

Review articleReview articles provide a comprehensive summary or discussion of an area of scientific research alongside a new perspective or conclusion. Review articles are a vital companion to research articles as they enable research to evolve. Typically, review articles are very highly cited and draw a high number of downloads.

Scoping Reviews: an ideal tool to determine the scope or coverage of a body of literature on a given topic and give clear indication of the volume of literature and studies available as well as an overview (broad or detailed) of its focus. Scoping reviews are useful for examining emerging evidence when it is still unclear what other, more specific questions can be posed and valuably addressed by a more precise systematic review.

Guidelines

Systematic Reviews: identifies, appraises and synthesizes all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a specific research question. Researchers conducting systematic reviews use explicit, systematic methods that are selected with a view aimed at minimizing bias, to produce more reliable findings to inform decision making.
